Ross Environmental Services, Inc. recently co-sponsored the "Trash to Treasure Art Contest" with the Midview High School Environmental Club, headed by Mrs. Angela Coleman, a science teacher at the high school.  The contest began on Earth Day, April 22nd, and was open to all Midview High School students. It was held to help build awareness of recycling and reusing materials.

Students were instructed to create original works of art from ‘trash,' materials that would otherwise have been discarded into a garbage can.  They were permitted to either work as individuals or in teams.  Participants were given a list of rules that outlined how they could go about constructing their artwork.   Once the artwork was created and turned in, it was judged by a panel of Ross associates, who evaluated each piece of artwork based on creativity and use of recycled materials.

Junior Jeremy Carandang took home the top prize of $200.  He created a sculpture of macramé birds entitled "One World, We're One."  The team of Olivia Smith, 11th grade, and Paige Tesmer, 11th grade, took home the second place prize of $100 with their bouquet of flowers created from recycled soda cans.  Third place honors went to Senior Madison Seman who constructed a cityscape out of used potato chip bags, straws, and sandpaper.
