Case Study: Managing A Plant Closing from A to Z

When L.G. Philips Display USA decided to close its Ohio television component manufacturing facility, the company was faced with segregating, characterizing, packaging, shipping and disposing of hazardous waste materials.

The company utilized Ross Environmental Services to manage all of its waste disposal needs at the facility, for containers that are less than one cubic yard in size.

2,300 Containers

Since there were more than 2,300 containers at the site, ranging in size from small eight ounce bottles up to one cubic yard boxes, this was a formidable task. Ross Environmental had one staff person at the site on a full-time basis working on the waste management issues. Materials that were safely managed include oils, greases, solvents, detergents, corrosive liquids and peroxides.

The RES site manager characterized, labelled and shipped the materials. He also maintained a computerized database to track every item and record its status from packaging to disposal.

Treatment & Disposal

RES’ sales support staff then completed the waste characterization process and shipped the materials off-site for appropriate treatment or disposal by landfill, recycling, incineration or another treatment method.

In addition, RES had a temporary person at the site to research and organize the Material Safety Data Sheets for all of the materials in compliance with applicable OSHA requirements.
